GEGERBOYO

Formed in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2017, “GEGERBOYO” is an art collective currently consisting of Enka Komariah, Prihatmoko Moki, and Anjali Nayenggita. The name “GEGERBOYO” (meaning “crocodile’s back”) comes from a hill resembling a crocodile’s back that has protected the region from volcanic eruptions. Drawing inspiration from Javanese cultural traditions, histories, urban culture, and contemporary social and political issues, the members collaborate on projects through a process of mutual response, much like the traditional theater form “Ketoprak.” Starting with murals, they engage in a diverse range of artistic expressions, including wayang (shadow puppetry), painting, batik, and installations.
